Research Themes at the University of Otago

In order to provide formal recognition and support for outstanding research activity in the University, during 1996 the Research Committee solicited and reviewed submissions on areas of research strength from staff. Key areas have been recognised as major Research Themes and Emerging Themes of the University.

Research Themes are areas of research in which the University is pre-eminent and to which it gives particular recognition and support. The detailed criteria for recognition are that they be research areas:

  1. in which the University already enjoys national leadership and international recognition for excellence,
  2. in which the University is likely to remain a major contributor in the next several years,
  3. which might involve active research groups or individuals from more than one Department, School or DIvision, and
  4. which have a demonstrated ability to attract significant additional funding from outside the University.
