Dr David O'Hare

David O'Hare is an Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Otago, Dunedin. He is co-author (with Stan Roscoe) of Flightdeck Performance: The Human Factor (1990) and is the editor of the recently published Human Performance in General Aviation (1999). He is the Pacific-Rim Editor for The International Journal of Aviation Psychology. He has a wide range of research interests in the fields of aviation psychology, cognitive ergonomics, and human decision making.

 

Jane Ford

Jane Ford is a distance PhD student in the Department of Psychology at the University of Otago. She completed her BA and MA (Hons) in Educational Psychology at the University of Auckland, as well as a Diploma in Social Sciences (Psychology) with distinction at Massey University. Jane is also a registered school teacher and has lectured in Assessment and Evaluation, Behaviour Management, and Human Development at Teachers College. Her current research interests include the evaluation of Crew Resource Management Training Programmes.  She is currently working with a major South Pacific commercial carrier in a longitudinal evaluation of the introduction, development, and optimisation of CRM programmes for both pilots and flight attendants.

 

Nadia Mullen

Nadia Mullen is an Assistant Research Fellow in the Department of Psychology at the University of Otago. Nadia has completed her BA in Psychology and is working towards a PhD at Otago University. She is currently working on aviation safety research funded by NASA and FAA. The NASA research involves using a computer-based training program and flight simulator to examine ways of enhancing case-based learning. The FAA research focuses on using the flight simulator to examine Aeronautical Decision Making.

 

Keryn Pauley

Keryn Pauley is a Demonstrator and Tutor in the Psychology Department at Otago University. She has completed a BSc(Hons) in Psychology and is currently completing her PhD at Otago University. Her research interests include Aeronautical Risk Management and Aeronautical Decision Making.  Keryn recently presented her research at the 50th Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, held in San Francisco, 2006.

 

Neil Stenhouse

Neil Stenhouse is a Demonstrator and Research Assistant in the Psychology Department at the University of Otago.  While at Otago University, Neil has completed a BSc in Psychology and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Psychology. He is currently examining the role of cognitive style in displays in Microsoft Office PowerPoint.

 

Hon Leng Teoh

Hon Leng Teoh has completed a Diploma in Computing and IT at the Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology, Malaysia, and a BA(Hons) at Otago University. She is currently completing a PhD in Psychology at Otago University, and is also a Demonstrator for the Psychology Department. She is examining task performance in 3D teleconferencing applications.

 

 


 Past Students


 

Richard Batt

Richard Batt is a Senior Transport Safety Investigator in Aviation with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. He completed his PhD in the Department of Psychology at the University of Otago, studying the role of accident and incident case histories in aviation safety and training. He is a graduate of Flinders University in South Australia and has worked in research in cognitive psychophysiology at the University of Adelaide, Australia.

 

Craig Colhoun

Craig Colhoun completed a BA and MA in Psychology at Otago University. Craig examined how different flight simulator visual configurations affected pilots' performance. 

 

Kerry O'Brien

Kerry O'Brien spent 7 years in the RNZAF where he gained two aircraft technical trade qualifications before leaving the air force to attend the University of Otago. After arriving at Otago, Kerry completed a BA(Hons) in Psychology and a PhD. Kerry was interested in human decision making in complex environments and examined individual differences in situational awareness in complex systems with air traffic control as the research model.

 

Karen Walsh

Karen Walsh has a BA and MA in Psychology from the University of Otago. She examined the role of case-based learning and attribution in pilots' decision making. 

 

Mark Wiggins

Mark Wiggins is an Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Western Sydney. He is the co-author (with Catherine Stevens) of Aviation Social Science: Research Methods in Practice (1999) and is a Registered Psychologist in New South Wales. His research interests include decision-making, expertise, and computer-based training.
